Earlier this year superherohype reported that BAD ROBOT and STAR WARS (Sequel Trilogy Director) J.J. Abrams and HBO Max were mulling over the prospect of films and TV shows based on Justice League Dark characters. This news came shortly after Abrams signed a five-year overall deal with WarnerMedia, but he never confirmed if this is what he was working on. Now, both camps have made it official.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Abrams will executive produce a Justice League Dark series through his Bad Robot banner. There was no mention which characters will show up on the series, which is still without an official name. However, in the comics, the team has included the likes of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Deadman, and Madame Xanadu, some of whom have already shown up in live-action DC adaptations. This obviously isn’t Hollywood’s first stab at bringing Justice League Dark to life. A film version languished in development for years under Guillermo del Toro and Doug Liman, who both left to pursue other endeavors.
Justice League Dark is the second major live-action DC series that will hit HBO Max in the coming years.
Back in October, the streaming service announced plans for a Green Lantern TV show with Arrowverse architect Gerg Berlanti producing. James Wan is producing an Aquaman animated miniseries for the platform also.JJ Abrams is also executive producing other new shows for HBO Max which is very exciting for fans, and one is “Overlook Hotel”, a spinoff of Stephen King’s The Shining.
The other is Duster, which Abrams is co-writing with The Walking Dead’s LaToya Morgan and centers on a getaway driver for a crime syndicate. Abrams will produce all of these series alongside his wife, Katie McGrath.
